Having read "Notes from the Trail," I couldn't wait for this second book to be published, and I was not disappointed!This is a wonderful,book not only about the hiking the Trail, but about life itself. How does a college student hiking alone in the 1970's manage both the trail and his self reflections and musings about the future, and about life? It is a very thoughtful, inspirational book; a nice easy read, well written, that is almost impossible to put down.
I recommend both books, but this one will stand just fine on it's own.

The story is about the hike the author took as a college student in the late 1970s of the entire 2100 miles of the Appalachian Trail from Maine to Georgia in 1978; he not only covers the story of the journey with suspense, love, a true warmth and a great sense of humor, but interspersed is the story of his family and growing up in Jewish Philadelphia. This is actually the second book in the Notes from the Trail series, and can stand on its own, but the first third of the trek is encapsulated in the first book, The Green Tunnel, also excellent, and about his relationship with his would-be companion. You can really feel the essence of the AT, its geography, and climate as the journey unfolds-- you are there.
Incredible, soul searching journey. I felt like I was hiking with David.
This is not your typical hiking book. If you are thinking about hiking the Appalachian Trail, or you never intend to, you will get something out of this book. The Author, Dave Barol, continues to shine with his thoughts, quotes and humor.
This second book in the Notes from the Trail series can stand alone. The walk in the woods continues, but this trail is more emotional and inspiring. This can easily be in the self-help book category. It's intensely personal and thought provoking. It will change the way you think about life, religion, goals and accomplishments.
